Lead magnets for online fitness coaches that turn into conversations
dmdrop team ยท
Most lead magnet advice for fitness coaches is built for email: a big ebook, an opt-in form, a five-email sequence. On Instagram it works differently. Someone comments a word under your Reel, your freebie lands in their DMs, and you're already in a conversation.
So the question isn't "what will get the most downloads?" It's "what will make people tell me something about themselves?" That's how you find the ones who are ready for coaching.
Here are freebies that work that way, and what to say in the DM with each.
What makes a fitness freebie start a conversation
- Usable today. A workout they can do tonight beats a 12-week program they'll "start Monday".
- Personal. It makes them think about their own body, schedule or goal, so they have an answer to give you.
- Specific. "3 moves for knee-friendly legs" beats "ultimate leg guide".
- One step from coaching. Using it should make clear what they'd get from you on top: the plan around it, the accountability, the adjustments.
1. A short program
Three days, one week, one goal: a 3-day split, a 20-minute home routine, a beginner's first week in the gym.
Keyword: PLAN

Quick question so I can send you the right tips with it: what are you going for?
- Lose fat, starting now
- Build muscle, starting now
- Just saving it for later
2. A form check
A one-page guide to the three mistakes you see most on one lift: squat, hip thrust, deadlift. Short videos or photos of each fix.
Keyword: FORM
DM:

Which one do you want to fix first?
- Knees cave in
- Heels lift
- Lower back rounds
- Not sure, I'd need someone to look
Option 4 is a natural opening: "Send me a 10-second video and I'll tell you."
3. A simple nutrition starter
A protein cheat sheet, a one-day meal template, or a grocery list for a fat-loss week. Keep it to one page.
Keyword: PROTEIN
DM:

What's hardest for you right now?
- Knowing how much to eat
- Sticking to it on busy days
- Eating enough protein
- Just curious
4. A self-check with a score
Ten quick questions: sleep, steps, training days, protein, stress. Each scores 0 to 2, and the total puts them in one of three groups.
Keyword: SCORE
DM:
Here's the 2-minute check [link]
Send me your score when you're done and I'll tell you the first thing I'd change.
This one asks for a reply on purpose. A personal read on their score is an easy way into a real conversation.
5. A plan for one problem
Workouts for travel weeks, a routine for new parents, a 15-minute session for days with no time. Narrow problems attract people who actually have them.
Keyword: TRAVEL
DM:

How often does travel get in the way of your training?
- Yes, every month
- Sometimes
- Not really, just saving it
"Yes, every month" is someone with a real, recurring problem, which is exactly what coaching fixes.
Tell who's ready
Every DM above ends with a question, and the answers sort people for you:
- A goal you coach, starting now, or a real recurring problem: reply yourself, today. This is a coaching conversation.
- Interested, no rush: a short, useful reply, then let them come back.
- Saving it, just curious: nothing more. They got something useful from you.
More on picking that question in One question that tells you which DM leads are ready to buy, and what to do after it in They commented "PLAN". Now what?
Mind the 24 hours
On Instagram, a business can send one automated reply to a comment, and the conversation only continues once the person writes back. Then you have 24 hours to answer. That's why every DM above ends with a question, and why the people who answer deserve a fast reply. The details are in Instagram's DM rules for coaches.
Where dmdrop fits
dmdrop does this for online fitness coaches: your freebie and one question go out when someone comments, you get an alert when an answer says they're ready, and a reminder before the reply window closes. It's free during the beta, and we let coaches in in small batches. Apply for early access.
