Instagram leads

They commented "PLAN". Now what?

dmdrop team ·

You post a Reel: "Comment PLAN and I'll send you my 3-day split." Sixty people comment. Your tool sends sixty DMs with a link. A week later you have sixty downloads and no new clients.

That's not a content problem. The Reel worked: sixty people raised their hand. The problem is what happened next. Most comment-to-DM setups stop at the link, and the link is where the conversation should start.

The same goes for a mindset coach whose Reel says "comment RESET". Here's what to do with the DM instead.

The first message: freebie plus one question

Instagram lets a business send one automated reply per comment. After that, nothing else goes out until the person writes back. So the first message has two jobs: deliver what they asked for, and give them a reason to reply.

Here's your 3-day split 💪 [link]

Quick question so I can send you the right tips with it: what are you going for?

  1. Lose fat, starting now
  2. Build muscle, starting now
  3. Just saving it for later

Why this works:

  • They get the freebie straight away. No hoops.
  • The question is easy. One number.
  • The reason is about them. "So I can send you the right tips" is help, not a pitch.

We go deeper into choosing that question in One question that tells you which DM leads are ready to buy.

Reply yourself to the ready ones

Anyone whose answer says "starting now" with a goal you coach is a hot lead. This is the moment to stop automating and be the coach.

A short voice note works well: thirty seconds, their name, their goal, one useful tip, and an easy next step.

"Hey Sam, saw you want to build muscle and you're ready to start. Big tip for the split: hit a protein target every day, it matters more than the exercise order. I take on a few 1:1 clients each month. Want me to send you how it works?"

That's not pushy. They told you they're ready; you're answering.

The catch is timing. Once they reply, Instagram gives you 24 hours to answer. If you spot their answer two days later, the window has closed and the moment has passed. Ready answers have a way of getting buried under everyone who said "saving it for later".

Following up without being pushy

For people who answered but went quiet after your reply, one follow-up inside the 24-hour window is fair. Make it useful, not "just checking in":

One more thing that helps with the split: put days 1 and 3 on non-consecutive days so your legs recover. Shout if you want help fitting it around your week.

Then stop. If they reply, great. If not, they still have your plan, and they'll see your next Reel.

What not to do:

  • Don't message people who never replied beyond the first DM. Instagram doesn't allow it, and it would feel like spam anyway.
  • Don't send three follow-ups. One useful one is enough.
  • Don't pitch "saving it for later". Give them the freebie and let your content do the work.

Putting it together

StepWhat you sendTo whom
1Freebie + one questionEveryone who commented
2Personal voice note, same day"Starting now" + a goal you coach
3A short, useful replyInterested, but not yet
4One useful follow-up, inside 24 hoursReplied, then went quiet
5Nothing"Saving it for later"

Sixty comments become a handful of real conversations. That's the point: your time goes to the people who are ready, not to sixty links.

Note which Reel each conversation came from, and you'll soon see which content brings clients, not just comments. Here's a simple way to do it.

Where dmdrop fits

dmdrop runs this flow: the freebie with one question, an alert when someone's answer says they're ready, a reminder before the 24-hour window closes, and a weekly view of which Reels brought those leads. It's free during the beta, and we let coaches in in small batches. Apply for early access.
