Instagram's DM rules for coaches, in plain English

dmdrop team ·

Every "comment PLAN and I'll send it to you" Reel runs on the same rules, set by Meta. Most coaches never read them, and plenty of advice online gets them wrong. Knowing them tells you what any tool can do for you, what it can't, and where your own replies matter most.

Here they are, short and checked against Meta's own developer docs.

Rule 1: one automated reply per comment

When someone comments on your Reel, a business account can send that person one private message in reply to the comment. Meta calls this a private reply. One per comment, not a sequence.

That reply has to go out within 7 days of the comment. For comments on a Live, it only works while the Live is running.

What it means for you: the first message has to carry everything that matters. Your freebie, or a clear way to get it, plus a reason to reply. A tool that promises to send three messages after a comment, before the person says anything, is promising something the rules don't allow.

Rule 2: the conversation continues only when they reply

After that first message, you can only send more once the person responds. When they do, you have 24 hours from their message to answer. Every time they reply, the 24 hours start again.

This is the "24-hour window" you hear about. Inside it, you can send what you like, including offers and links: Meta's messaging policy allows promotional content inside the window.

What it means for you:

  • The first message should ask for a reply. A question is the easiest way: "What's your main goal right now?" (We cover which questions work in Two questions that qualify a coaching lead.)
  • When someone replies, the clock is running. A hot lead who answered at 9pm and hears back from you two days later is outside the window, and probably moved on.

Rule 3: a person gets more time than a bot

Meta has an exception for humans. With what it calls the human agent tag, a real person (not automation) can reply up to 7 days after the customer's last message. It's meant for support that can't be finished in 24 hours, and it can't be used for promotions.

What it means for you: missing the 24 hours isn't always the end of the conversation, but the extra time is for genuine, personal replies, not "just checking in!" blasts. Don't plan your sales around it.

Rule 4: they don't need to follow you

People don't have to follow you to get your DM. If they don't follow you, the message lands in their message requests instead of their main inbox (Meta's docs). Some people never check requests.

"Follow me to get the link" is a feature some tools offer, not a Meta rule. It may grow your follower count, but it adds a step between the person and what they asked for.

What it means for you: say in your caption or Reel that the freebie comes by DM, so people know to look, including in requests.

Rule 5: there's a speed limit

Meta caps private replies at 750 per hour per account (Instagram Platform overview). Most coaches will never hit it. If a Reel goes viral, replies can take a while to reach everyone, whichever tool you use.

Rule 6: be clear, and stop when asked

Meta's policy asks businesses to respect people who don't want messages, and recommends making it clear when a chat is automated. In practice:

  • Don't message people who never contacted you.
  • If someone says stop, stop.
  • If your DMs are automated, it's fine, and often better, to say so.

ig.me/m/yourhandle opens a DM thread with you in the Instagram app (Meta's docs). It's handy in your bio, emails or on your website. It doesn't work on Instagram's website, only in the app.

What this adds up to

You want to...Allowed?
Send the freebie automatically when someone commentsYes, one message per comment, within 7 days
Send a second automated message before they replyNo
Ask a question in the first messageYes, and you should
Keep the conversation going after they replyYes, within 24 hours of their last message
Reply by hand a few days later to a genuine questionYes, a person can, within 7 days, no promotions
DM everyone who viewed your ReelNo

The rules reward one thing: replying fast when someone answers. The automated part ends after the first message. Everything after that depends on noticing who replied and getting back to them while it still counts.

That's what dmdrop is built around: the first message with a question, then an alert when a lead's answer says they're ready, and a reminder before the window closes. It's free during the beta, and we let coaches in in small batches. Apply for early access.

We last checked these rules against Meta's developer documentation on October 28, 2026. Meta changes its platform from time to time; the linked pages are the source of truth.
